Of all topics related to this graduate program, I knew I wanted to further investigate flow states for my final project. If you’ve read all my blog posts up to this one, you know that’s a topic that I’m very intrigued by.
When I decided to study social media’s effect on focus in the workplace, I began to dig deeper into topics such as the history of digitized work, social media’s effect on employee attention spans, and solutions to create a healthier work life.
I began by searching academic databases, and I learned so much. Social media was only introduced to the world in the beginning of the century, and people are already spending almost three full hours of the day on social networking sites in 2023. Additionally, according to CareerBuilder, loss in productivity due to social media accounts for a 48% decrease in quality of work and 26% decrease in revenue. We all know social media has negative impacts on our lives, but to see numbers as drastic as those really puts it into persective.
After gathering all my information, both popular and scholarly, I synthesized my sources, made a mind map, created an outline, and then began writing my paper. As someone who enjoys writing, I found it motivating to see how taking all these steps allowed for a well-organized paper.
Once the writing was done, I was able to start designing – my favorite part. I incorporated charts, graphs, illustrations, and even a timeline to help the reader visualize my main points.
I’m very proud of the way this paper turned out, but I’m most proud of the way I’ve started to take my own suggestions within the paper. I learned how important it is to create a distraction-free work area and dedicate specific time for social media away from my work.
The process of working on this white paper was a long one, but it was definitely worthwhile.
Click here to read my white paper, and hopefully you’ll be able to apply these strategies to your own life. Happy reading! 😊
